Hi All - I have a very perplexing oil leak going on with my 396 oil cannister that is leaking from the top where it interfaces with the block. I had no problem until I changed oil last time. I drove about five or six miles, parked it, then the next day I started it up and oil started pouring out. Dropped the cannister, new o-ring, held in place while helper tightened the bolt. Same thing, just fine, drove maybe 20 miles, parked, next day leaking again on start up. Again took the cannister off, cleaned the top edge of the cannister and Gasgacinched the o-ring to the top. Held it up while helper tightened, same result, no leak until the next day.

I've installed cannister type oil filters since these cars were new so am very familiar with the o-ring having to align and how tight to torque the bolt. Does the by-pass pressure valve ever get clogged? Would the spring inside the cannister wear out? Any ideas what is going on here? TIA.

Make sure an old o-ring hasn`t stuck to the block from a previous oil change. Terry.

No old o-ring stuck to block.

Any update on your problem? I also have the canister type filter on my 402BB. I had a look at it and didn't see anything that could potentially cause this problem.

We just put an adapter for a screw on on my buddy 327. It works great and it takes a SB screw on filter. I had an old adapter on another SB and it used a ford spin on both worked great! There worth the money! Now between the 2 of us we have 3 old canisters if anyone needs a replacement. Email me!!
