i have a 327 turbo fire in my chevelle the engine has a larger cam, camel hump heads, headman headers, and a holly 800 cfm 4 barrel carb.
but when i mash down on the accelerator from a stop the engine will rev up about 300 rpms above idle then it hessitates and goes down to idle and then finally takes off at full speed i would like to find how to stop this hessitation so i can possibly shave off a second or two from my runs:confused:

Youre experiencing a classic case of bogging. Your carb is too big. When you nail it the air speed drops to zero and the only thing keeping the engine running is the fuel being shot in by the venturi. Try a 650 double pumper, that should be perfect.

Exactly what he said... 800 is for like a 427. Classic example of bigger is not always better. It's why the 70 Boss has smaller int. valves then a 69 Boss (am I right?)

Yeah, but valves cant really cause bogging because its at the end of the charge. But yeah, the valves were huge either way, 2.23 in '69, 2.19s in '70.

2.23 is *****ing huge for a small block. What size valves did the DZ302 have?

The DZ 302 had 2.02 valves. They were basically the old fuelie heads. And theboss is right on about the carburation. A 650 cfm will work nicely. If it still bogs you may have to put 50cc accellerator pumps on it or change the pump cams to come in quicker. You did not say what intake you are using, but you should only be using a dual plane.

Good point on the intake, but im not sure if this guy is still around. I am THEBOSS, I just changed my name to my MuscleCarClub name when we all came over here. And sorry for never answering you question Every_Mn, although I can swear I did. I think some other posts of mine have been deleted too, like Larry's were over at MCC.

Well, whoed a thunk it?

THEBOSS, a Ford moniker is really a 375 hp L78 Chevy Big Block?

Are you a Cheord or a Fovy?

Maybe a Boss 396?

I have recently had a friend of mine who rebuilds racing carbs look at it and he says that the carb has the jets from an 850 carb in it instead of the 750s and its pouring a stream of gas that isn't atomizing so its bogging down. thanks for all the advice. In my origional post i said the carb was an 800 but i was mistaken its actually a 750.

You may find the 750 is still too big. Don't be afraid to go the the 650 if the problem persists. It has plenty of capability to feed your 327 for the street. Please give us an up date on your progress.
