The Plymouth Road Runner was a car built by the Plymouth division of the Chrysler Corporation in the United States between 1968 and 1980. In 1968, the original batch of muscle cars were in the opinion of many moving away from their roots as relatively cheap fast cars as they gained more and more options. Although Plymouth already had a performance car in the GTX, they decided to go back to the drawing board and reincarnate the original muscle car concept. Plymouth wanted to create a car that would run 14 second times in the quarter mile and would sell for less than US $3,000. They met both of their goals and the idea of the low-buck musclecar hit the street.
Paying $50,000 to Warner Brothers to use the name and cartoon likeness of their Road Runner cartoon character (as well as a "beep-beep" horn), and using the Chrysler B platform as a base (the same base as the Belvedere, Satellite and GTX), Plymouth set out to build a back-to-basics muscle car. Everything essential to performance and handling was beefed-up and improved; everything nonessential was left out. The interior was spartan, lacking even carpets, and few options were available. The standard engine was a 383 cu.in.(6.3L) V8 rated at 335 bhp and 425 ft·lbf of torque. For an extra US $714, Plymouth would install a 426 cu. in. Hemi rated at 425 bhp and 490 ft·lbf of torque. Combined with low weight, the 6-passenger Road Runner could run the 1/4 mile in 13.4 s @ 105 mph. It would prove to be one of the best engines of the muscle car era and the Road Runner - one of the best platforms to utilize it. Plymouth expected to sell about 2,000 units in 1968; actual sales numbered around 45,000. (It should also be noted that Dodge debuted the Road Runner's cousin, the Super Bee, that same year.)

It wouldn't surprise me, I don't claim that I'm the author of the article, I was fishing for information with google and came up with that.

man dude, I know Mn, runner, daffy, and some others know of this, but i got to tell the rest of you, my neighbor has this sweet red 1969 Road Runner with a 440 six pack, centerlines, and those 2 think black stripes on the hood. one time I saw him take it out for its weekly run, and I heard him from 2 miles away drag a ricer, when he came back, i only asked him "who won?" and he just said, "who do you think?" i couldn't help but laugh.

That's 2" headers by Doug into a 3" Flowmaster pipes for y...
Personally, though, I think the stock exhaust systems on most musclecars sounds better than lots of the aftermarket stuff.

Meh... I heard a 2.5" Flowmaster setup (Supe 40s) on a big block Cuda... sounded like crap, IMO.

Thats because flowmasters sound like crap, everyone has them and they dont always sound good and dont flow good, IMO.

This debate on what sounds better can go on forever and everyone is right because it sounds better to him or her.
Now I like to pride myself on all the muscle cars, being able to tell what size engine by listening to the exhaust Big Block Or Small Block V8's.
Although I am not always right.
Now as far as exhaust goes, on the V8 Muscle, the bigger the pipe the better the flow means more horsepower, Now on the newer cars I am told that they need some back pressure to run right.
I know I am going to get hit for this next comment, but it is my opinion and everyone has their own.
I know there probably are quite a few 3,4,5,6-cylinder cars that are fast etx.
But it seems funny to me to see some of these new cars with the muffler bigger than the motor.
Now in the movie Fast and Furious II, It showed a guy in a Yenko Camero, and a Hemi Coda, agreeing to run for titles, against 2 what I call windups, those little cars, Now that will never ever will happen in real life, Because the Yenko and Hemi Cuda's are very very rare and expensive, They are true legends and They try to make you believe that they would race for titles against 2 windups.
Now feel free to jump back at me, but use decent language please.
Otis:)

I saw that......worst moment in movie history. and those ricers (or tuners as they like to be called) always bring that up when they brag about their cars to me all that crap about how Imports are better......then I tell them that I'll race them for their titles and they back off for some reason.
I HATE RICERS!!!

Rice sucks. The only reason that the Evos and such can keep up is because they have 4.56s and like a 3.7 first gear, because they have a six speed. And in that Fast And The Furious bullcrap, the race actually started off realistic. Guy in the Hemi Challenger only takes off about quarter to half throttle, and then punches it when he gets going and pulls a huge length. However, the riceburner never would have come back, nitrous or not. The Yenko would have gone, and he would have turned faster because hes racing a 200,000 car (although they could have been clones in the movie I guess, bringing the value down to around 30,000, and I know that they were clones in real life) and he had nothing to gain by going head on with the ricer, although he would have made a big splat out of that plastic. Then he stalls by turning off the road. WTF!? And the riceburner comes back. Oh btw, the writer for the Fast And Ricerous movies is a ricer, so there is your explanation. Imagine a movie I would direct, hmmmmmmm................................:)

you think they can go that fast without N2O?
and in mine it would just be me challengeing ricers and watchin them try to talk their way out........ or make excuses after they lose.:D
