Hi, My Dad has a 1966 Merc. Comet Cyclone GT, it has the 390 hipo in it. He originally bought one new in 66. It had a 735 Holley carb on it, but none of the books show holley having that carb, and you cann't find one anywhere. The books he has call for a 600 cfm, duel feed holley. That's where my question comes from. Is that carb big enough for the 390? He bought one from Pony Carbs. and they sent the wrong one. He ordered one for an auto trans., and sent him one for a standard. To top it off they wouldn't replace it with the correct one. And there's something else wrong with it as well, when he opens it up to take off hard it falls on it face, sometimes it even stalls! He almost got hit because of it, so he want's to get a new one and he wants to make sure it's right this time.
He also needs the kick down rod for it. So if anyone has one they're wanting to get rid of let me know.
Any help on this will be appreciated.

Well I run a Holley 750 on my 351 CJ and the hubby also runs the same carb on his 429, I can't say I've ever heard of a 735 either. I really wouldn't run less than a 650 on that 390, I think you'd be happier with the 750. JMO
When we first bought the Ranchero it had the same stumble problem... we took off the stock carb and put on a Carter 650, it was better but still not as responsive as we would like we then were told by a friend to run the 750, and we have it jetted to 69's...and I tell you what a big difference.

There used to be a lot of those old 735s around they did make them( as I recall they were on the 428s).. I would recommend the holley 3310 that is 715 CFM with vacuum secondaries

If the car stalls when you hit it, probably one of 4 things
1. accellarator pump in the carb bad.
2. fuel pump has low fuel pressure.
3. timming needs to be advanced about 2 to 4 degrees.
4. bad valcum advance or hole in the valcum advance line.
okay that's 4 1/2
