Today I began work on the Javelin.
-Removed 10"x10" patch of body filler from driver side fender.
-Removed 4"x4" patch of filler from passenger side fender, uncovered rusty pinholes.
-Removed cracking filler from driver side C-pillar, uncovered seam where replacement quarter-panel had been brazed into place. Brazes were very badly done, not ground off, and large gaps were left and filled with filler.
-Removed bubbling filler from passenger side rear wheel opening. Uncovered small pinholes above wheel opening and a large, putty-filled rust hole behind the wheel opening.
-Removed door latch, and window glass from passenger door
-Removed front and rear seats, carpet, seatbelts and door panels. Uncovered rotted floorboards on both sides. Badly done patches had been put in place using ducting metal and pop-rivets.
-Removed patch from passenger side floor board. Uncovered 15 square inches of clean Ohio air.
Well, that was my Sunday. I was kind of angry about the quarter panel, and even more so about the shoddy patch job behind the wheel well. They just shoved a peice of tin paper in this big rust-hole to hold the filler while it dried.
I should have known about the quarter panel though. Taped to the backside of it inside the trunk was the reciept for the panel. The replacement panel was ordered directly from American Motors Corp. so the replacement must have happened prior to 1987, when AMC was purchased by Chrysler and became Chrysler's Jeep/Eagle division. The floor I am less angry about. I kind of expected the floors to be bad after the first time I drove the car when I tried to put my seatbelt on and pulled the whole seatbelt assembly clean out of the floor. I've taken pictures of all of this, so once I find a way to get them on my PC, you can all share in my joy. I'll keep posting as I continue repair my car and repeatedly build up my immunity to tetanus. Good Night.
