in a mopar, would you rather have a 440, Hemi, or a simple small block? for me it all depends on the car. i prefer most dodgs to have Hemis, and most plymouths to have 440's, so i really dont know. how about you?

A tall-deck big block, any day of the week. Except casual Friday. Then I'll have a 340 6-bbl.

A tall-deck big block.
That doesnt really narrow it down

I'd take either a 440-6 or a 426. I've seen them both in action and depending on the driver there both very close in performance. Ofcourse it also depends on how each was tuned.

That narrows it down to a 413, 426, or a 440. Or a 383, actually, too.

Of course, if they both perform similar, then I'll take the easier-to-live-with and better-sounding one.

Didn't they have a 383 RB for about a year?

I have heard tell of that but have never seen one....Kinda like the 350 big block mopar

Yeah, I think they mainly went into Windsors and Saratogas. A few slipped out with the long ram setups and short rams, and were terrors on the strip.

Yes, IIRC......it was for '62..........but don't hold me to it. I know they were used in many Dodge Police cars.

Those old cop cars were. Cool. I want a '69 Polara cop car... 440 and a 3.55 SurreGrip out back.

I cant say, dad's roadrunner has a 383 big block, my camaro has a 350 small. Ive never driven a hemi or a 440, or a 427. So in my experience, i would have to say small block. You can build a small block to run with a big block pretty easily.
Ive heard very good things about the big blocks such as low RPM torque and massive power, along with that comes the bad with weight, unless you build them right.....they cant handle as high RPMs as small blocks.
So, i guess i wasnt very clear, i would go with the small block.

You can make a big block rev, around 8,000 rpms is possible out of most Chevy big blocks without using a ton of aftermarket parts or anything. Theres usually no need to do that though.

I respect your opinion, but I was under the impression was that muscle was about feeling the power.
Sure, that 350 Cutlass sounded mean and revved nice, but that 383 Cuda I got to sit in once (I ever mention that?) was practically a lighter-years difference. You could just feel it...

well, I've never driven a 426 HEMI, but I've driven 318's, 340's, 360's, a 383, a 392 HEMI, a 400, a 413, and 440's
and the verdict is.....440+6
did you even have to ask?

a Hemi for a Semi? i dont know, all i know is they no longer allow Hemis. they were just too fast after the superbird and daytona owned the track.

thats what I hate about NASCAR too many restrictions, they should have a CID limit and be naturally aspairated, and have to look stock.

Duster, I completely agree with you. The 426 Hemi is tied for the best or is the best musclecar engine ever. The 440 Six Pack is a pretty distant third or fourth.

Even though they produced signifigantly more torque, and over a wider powerband? And with better driveability and lower cost?
The best thing the Hemi has going for it is high-revviness and lookin' good.
Duster_340
09-12-2006, 03:16 AM
and the fact it a Hemi. any time you hear Hemi your just like "Hemi? Where? Beans?" if I made a show car, then Hemi. if i made a racer, 440. and it depends on the car too.

Hmmm, which one ran faster times while still having much more traction problems? I rest my case. And where is your proof that a 440 makes more torque over a wider band?
RiversideParish
09-12-2006, 05:40 PM
It should be obvious... 1540cfm of air flow, 2.25 valves, a big solid cam...
A formula for a lack of bottom-end. Even it it still has more torque, it would come at a much higher RPM. And generally, these types are usually quite peaky. Common sense, really. I guess.
THEL78ISGREAT
09-12-2006, 08:02 PM
You really dont get the point of the Hemi head do you? IT UNSHROUDS THE VALVES. It therefore suck in more air and gas because of a higher VE. Having big valves dont really make an engine more sluggish. You cant floor a Hemi off of the line anyway, so who cares how much CFM it has? If its so sluggish then why does it pull in better times?
RiversideParish
09-12-2006, 08:28 PM
They don't... Six-Packs are just as fast. I've talked to several Hemi and Six-Pack owners, and I always here the same thing.
If it were a light-to-light streertrace, most of it would go to the 440. Now, it was was a Cannonball Run or NASCAR track or something... obvious.

LOL, I dont give a crap what they say. They oviously didnt know how to drive a Hemi. A '66 tuned Hemi would shread of 13.25s easily in a Charger. No Six Pack could do that.

My six pack went 13.00 on six inch tires.I think a properly tuned Hemi would do better than that

Hearing it has nothing to do with it. There was a '71 Cuda with a 440 Six Pack that was across the lot and left about 10 minutes before. It didnt compare. You havent heard the Hemi to compare it to. And the thing you completely are not taking into consideration is that the '69s ALL HAD 4.10S!
